Brief History of Central, SC

Despite the town's name, Central is not located in the center of South Carolina, but rather, between Charlotte, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia. In fact, it is this reason why the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Company set its sights on this small town, bringing with it a booming railroad age along with the economic prosperity that attracted many future residents. That was back in 1873 and Central was quickly incorporated as a town two years later. Today, the town still relies on the railroad as freight trains still run through the town though much of Central's economic prosperity stems from Southern Wesleyan University.

Parks and Recreation

Central's Parks and Recreation Department offers residents a variety of sports programs and leagues, including baseball, softball, flag football, and basketball, among others. Other recreational programs and enrichment programs are available through the Central-Clemson Recreation Center. Here at the Recreation Center residents can sign up for aerobics classes, martial arts, dance lessons, swimming classes, and take part in various sports leagues.

Central Railroad Festival

The railroads play a pivotal role in the history of Central as it brought in an era of prosperity, turning the community into the tight-knit, friendly and progressive town that it is today. To celebrate the town's historical landmark, residents are invited to join their friends and neighbors in celebrating the Central Railroad Festival in Downtown Central along Main Street. The festival includes a number of food vendors, craft booths, kids activities, art and musical performances, as well as the popular Heritage Tours.
